Welcome to the Dept. Of Oriental Languages, SH College, Thevara. The Dept. was established in 1944 and is a composite department of four major languages Sanskrit, Malayalam, Hindi and French. We offer a common course as additional language for the students of BA/B.Sc. and B.Com. Language is the carrier of culture and it is the expression of ideas. The study of language and literature is essential for students to have a deep understanding of Indian literature and to learn the spirit of Indian culture as well as other cultures. Sanskrit is the mother of many Indian languages.
The Vedas’, Upanishads, Puranas and Dharma sutras are all written in Sanskrit. And the study of Sanskrit gives us a great opportunity to know the soul of ancient India. Malayalam the mother tongue of Keralites originated from ‘Sen-Tamil’ in the sixth century and was designated as a Classical Language of India in 2013.The study of Malayalam literacy works not only enriches the students knowledge of their mother tongue but also opens up new horizons of understanding to them. Hindi the true successor of Sanskrit language is an old and beautiful language which has a lot of Indian poetry, literature as well as many sacred texts. The students who take Hindi as an additional language aim to become proficient in the National language of the country. It help the students to develop communication and Technical skills in Applied Hindi as well as Functional Hindi.
By including the Occidental language French in The Dept. of Oriental languages (By virtue of being one of the Second languages on offer) it has become a curious department where east and west meet. And thus the students are exposed to the western culture and values as well.
